Add a live source

Create a feed for an encoder, an SRT crew, an automated camera or a review camera, and find the connection details your crew will need.

Most live pictures reach your platform through a feed. Producers and technical leads create one feed per camera position or venue, then reuse it in events, live channels and the Pipelines board. There are 4 kinds of live source, and you choose between them with a single picker when you create the feed.

The four kinds of live source

Feed type in the StudioUse it forWhere you can use it
NormalAn encoder push from OBS, vMix or a hardware encoderEvents, live channels and the Pipelines board
SRTCrews on unreliable connections — the same kind of feed, pushed over SRT instead of RTMPEvents, live channels and as a source on the Pipelines board — never as a route destination, and not in crew sign-in feed lists. It plays back exactly like a Normal feed
AI Camera (automated camera)An always-on camera that films unattendedThe AI Camera source mode on an event, and the Feed Hub
VAR Camera (review camera)Instant replay for officialsThe Pipelines board, the Feed Hub and your review system — never events

Create a feed

  1. 1
    Open Feeds

Go to Studio → Feed Console → Feeds and select New feed. If the button isn’t there, the console is locked — see the console password lock.

  2. 2
    Name the feed

Enter a Name people will recognise on a busy night, such as the venue and camera position. Crew members see feeds listed by this name when they sign in.

  3. 3
    Enter the stream details

Fill in Stream ID — the feed’s unique broadcast ID, which also acts as its stream key — and Base URL, the streaming server address you were given when your platform was set up.

  4. 4
    Choose the feed type

Pick Normal, SRT, AI Camera or VAR Camera. The hint under the picker explains each one. An SRT feed needs nothing extra: its SRT details are worked out from the Base URL and Stream ID.

  5. 5
    Set quality and availability

Turn on Adaptive bitrate to give viewers several quality levels. Leave Active on — inactive feeds aren’t offered in pickers or to crew sign-ins.

  6. 6
    Create it

Select Create feed. The feed appears in the list with its Stream ID, Adaptive setting and status.

Find the connection details

Select Console on a feed’s row to open its detail page. The Ingest Configuration section holds everything an encoder needs, and each value has a Copy button so nobody retypes a key.

Feed typeWhat Ingest Configuration shows
NormalRTMP URL and Stream Key
SRTSRT URL, Hostname, Stream ID, Port, Mode, Protocol and Max Bitrate. Port and mode are set platform-wide, so they’re shown read-only without a Copy button.

Sources for events

An event doesn’t always need a feed of its own. Its Source mode decides where the picture comes from: attach an existing feed, let the platform give the event its own push address and key, or use an automated camera. See the three ways to go live.
