Manage device limits and sign devices out
Set how many devices each plan allows, understand what happens when a viewer goes over, and show viewers how to sign a device out remotely.
On this page
Device limits curb password sharing without locking anyone out. You set the limit on each subscription plan; viewers see and sign out their own devices from their account page. Finance and support staff should both know how it behaves, because an over-limit viewer has already paid.
Set a plan’s device limit
- 1Open the plan
Go to Studio → Management → Subscription Plans and open the plan, or create a new one.
- 2Enter the limit
Type a number from 1 to 999 in Device limit. New plans start at 1.
- 3Save
Save the plan. The new limit applies to everyone holding it.
What counts as a device
| Situation | Counted? |
|---|---|
| A signed-in browser | Yes, until that browser’s sign-in expires |
| A signed-in mobile app | Yes |
| A signed-in TV, including QR sign-in | Yes |
| Signing in again on the same app or TV | Replaces the old sign-in; no extra device |
| A viewer holding several plans | The most generous limit among their active plans applies |
| A viewer with no paid plan | No limit applies |
| Staff accounts | Never limited |
What happens over the limit
Signing in is never blocked. The new device signs in, and once the account is over its limit, paid content pauses on all of its devices until the viewer signs one out. When they press play, they’re told exactly why: Device limit reached, how many devices the plan allows, how many they’re using, and a list with a Log out button beside each device. Once they’re back under the limit, playback unlocks.
How a viewer signs a device out remotely
- 1Open Devices
The viewer opens their account page and scrolls to Devices (“Where you’re logged in”). It shows how many devices they’re using out of their limit, with the one they’re using marked This device.
- 2Choose the device
They press Log out next to the browser, phone or TV they want to remove.
- 3Confirm
They confirm Log out this device?. That device is signed out immediately and has to sign in again.
